We got to work with Monmouthshire County Council as part of an SBRI project to combat loneliness and isolation in Monmouthshire. Zipabout's theory? That Demand Responsive Transport could be integrated into the social activity and support networks in this heavily rural county, in order to make sure people could still travel and get out and about.
Like many UK counties, Monmouthshire has a large rural population with limited access to regular bus or rail services. Working with Traveline Cymru, Zipabout undertook a county-wide research programme to identify demand and transport black-spots, and provide the tools to connect demand with latent supply. DRT does not need a city with millions of people - it needs good data and an integrated approach led by the local authority.
